What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Appointment (Hint: It's Pretty Low-Key)

So you've made the appointment. Maybe your dentist mentioned it was time to get your kid evaluated. Maybe you've been thinking about your own smile for a while and finally decided to do something about it. Either way, you've got a date on the calendar — and now you're wondering what exactly you signed up for.

Here's the short answer: probably the most relaxed medical appointment you'll have all year.

A first orthodontic consultation isn't uncomfortable, complicated, or high-pressure. By the time you finish reading this, you'll know exactly what to expect — step by step — so you can walk in feeling calm and walk out with a clear picture of what comes next.

And if you haven't booked yet? At Northwest Orthodontics, the first consultation is always free — whether you come in to one of our three locations or do it virtually from your couch.

First Things First — What Kind of Appointment Is This?

Before anything else, let's clear something up that surprises a lot of people: a consultation and actually getting braces are two completely separate appointments.

Your first visit is purely informational. No one is putting brackets on your teeth today. No wires, no trays, no commitments. This appointment is simply about getting a look at what's going on and talking through your options. Think of it as a conversation with a little bit of an exam mixed in.

If you decide to move forward with treatment, that appointment comes later — and you'll know exactly what to expect from it too, because the team will walk you through everything before it happens.

What Happens When You Walk In

If you've been picturing a sterile, clinical waiting room with bad magazines and that particular kind of silence that makes you feel like you should be nervous — that's not what you're walking into at Northwest Orthodontics.

The offices are genuinely fun. The team is warm. People actually seem to like working there (if you spend five minutes on their website, this becomes pretty obvious). You'll be greeted at the front desk, get any necessary paperwork sorted, and from there it moves quickly.

The Exam — What the Doctor Is Actually Looking At

Once you're back with Dr. Gray or Dr. Trieu, they'll take a look at your teeth, jaw, and bite. In plain terms, they're looking at:

How your teeth are spaced. Are there gaps? Crowding? Are teeth overlapping or rotated?

How your bite fits together. This is how your upper and lower teeth meet when you close your mouth — including overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites.

The overall health of your teeth and gums. Orthodontic treatment works best when teeth are healthy, so the doctor will take note of anything that might need to be addressed with your dentist first.

Depending on your specific situation, they may also take X-rays (to see what's happening below the gumline and how teeth are positioned in the jaw) and photos (to have a clear record of your starting point). Both are quick and completely painless.

The Conversation — What They'll Tell You

This is the part most people are most curious — and most nervous — about. Here's what the conversation typically covers:

Whether treatment is actually needed. Honest answer: not everyone who comes in needs braces, and if that's the case, Dr. Gray and Dr. Trieu will tell you so. They may recommend monitoring and coming back in six months to a year, particularly for younger kids whose teeth are still developing. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be evaluated by age 7 — not because most 7-year-olds need braces, but because early detection makes a real difference when treatment is needed.

Which treatment options fit your situation. If treatment is recommended, the doctor will walk you through what they'd suggest and why — whether that's Damon braces, Damon Clear ceramic braces, or Invisalign. At NWO, all three options cost the same — so the recommendation is based entirely on what's best for your teeth, not what's most profitable.

How long treatment would take. The average NWO patient wears braces for 12–18 months, though this varies based on the complexity of the case. You'll get a realistic estimate, not a vague "it depends."

What it costs and how to make it work. The team will walk you through financing options — low down payments, extended payment plans, and how insurance factors in. Nobody's going to hand you a bill and stare at you. It's a real conversation.

The one thing this appointment is not? A sales pitch. Northwest Orthodontics is pretty upfront about the fact that they're not interested in pressuring anyone into a decision. If you have questions this post doesn't answer, the Common Questions page covers a lot of ground.

How Long Does the Appointment Take?

Plan for roughly 30–45 minutes, though it can be shorter depending on how many questions you have. It's a comfortable amount of time — long enough to get real answers, short enough that you could squeeze it into a lunch break.

What to Bring (and What You Don't Need to Stress About)

Helpful to have:

  • Your insurance card, if you have orthodontic coverage
  • Any recent dental X-rays, if your dentist gave them to you
  • A list of questions if you're the type who thinks of everything at midnight and forgets it by morning

Not required:

  • A complete dental history
  • Records from a previous orthodontist
  • Any particular level of preparation at all

The team handles everything else. Show up, and they'll take it from there.

What Happens After the Consultation?

You leave with clarity — not a commitment.

After the appointment, you'll have a clear picture of your treatment options, a recommendation from the doctor, an estimated timeline, and a sense of what it would cost. What you won't have is any pressure to decide on the spot.

Some families leave ready to get started right away. Others need a few days to talk it over, check on insurance, or just sleep on it. Both are completely fine. If and when you're ready to move forward, scheduling your next steps is easy — and the team will walk you through financing options to make sure the numbers work for your family.

If you're a parent bringing a kid in for their first visit, our Kids Braces Survival 101 guide is a great thing to read together before or after the appointment. And if you're an adult considering treatment for yourself, Adult Braces Survival 101 covers the questions adults tend to have that are a little different from what parents are asking.

Can I Do This Virtually?

Yes — and it's genuinely easy.

If you're not ready to come in, or you're in Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, Van Buren, or anywhere else across Northwest Arkansas or the River Valley and want to get a feel for things first, a free virtual consult lets you do exactly that. You'll connect with the NWO team, share some photos of your smile, and get real feedback — all without leaving home.

It's a great first step for anyone who wants answers before they're ready to schedule.

Ready to See What Your Smile Could Look Like?
